Even though we just returned from a short weekend getaway at Atlantis in the Bahamas, we had purchased tickets for the Broadway show Wicked months ago, and, knowing it would be a late evening we booked the Hilton New York located at 1335 Avenue of the Americas (also known as 6th Avenue.) Our Sunday night January rate was just $179 plus tax with advanced purchase for a total of $208.90 for a standard King room.
The hotel is well located and within easy walking distance to Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Fifth Avenue shopping, Broadway theatres/Times Square, and, Central Park. Our theater was a mere two blocks away making it perfect for our needs for the evening.
Check-in was extremely fast, and, there was virtually no line. Within 3 minutes of walking through the front door, we were on our way up to our room on the 7th floor. The room and bathroom were very clean and our special request for extra towels and pillows was honored and waiting for us on the bed when we walked through the door. While the room was a good size and even featured a sofa, the bathroom was on the small size and had we not requested extra towels in advance, there wouldn’t have been enough for two adults even for one night. The noise was at minimum level and the bed was comfortable which made for an easy night’s sleep.
Our king bed room featured maple woods and leather accents, a love-seat sofa, large work desk, Alarm-clock radio, two-line telephones with voicemail, in-room safe, coffeemaker, mini-bar, iron, ironing board, and an ion hair dryer. The bathroom had Crabtree & Evelyn La Source products.
Overall – If you’re looking for a hotel on the West side without being in the Times Square area, I highly recommend the Hilton New York. Security at this hotel is excellent, and, you must show a room key to even enter the hotel after 9PM and you must show a room key to proceed to the elevator banks. If you’re local (from New Jersey) and need a hotel for the evening or longer, Hilton New York is a great choice, however, be advised, if you get frustrated by tourists, you may want to avoid this hotel due to the proximity to the West side and the tourist attractions that out-of-towners love. Regardless of the tourist factor, I know we will return to this hotel again.
- Great advance purchase price
- Friendly staff
- Easy access to the A, C, and, E subway lines which are just one block away to the West and the B, D, and F lines which are about a block and a half to the East
- Good security, making it a good choice for single women traveling to NYC
- Some wear and tear on the room furniture (our sofa had a good sized rip in it at the top of the arm)
- Bathroom a bit small
- Had we not made the request for extra towels, there wouldn’t have been enough for two people, even for just one night
- Lots of tourists and tour groups
