A Black Tie Affair by Sherrill Bodine
When Athena Smith, goddess and fashion curator for the Chicago History Museum, is given the opportunity to acquire gowns from the illustrious Clayworth family collection, she refuses to let anything stop her. Not even the muddied association she has with the Clayworth family—or, more importantly, with Drew Clayworth in particular. However, when a mysterious toxin from the antique gowns makes her ill, there is no avoiding him.
Eligible but unobtainable Drew Clayworth would rather be anywhere else than standing in the hospital and staring into the face of the woman who betrayed him fifteen years ago. And although he hates to admit it, there is no denying the spark that lingers between them. However, Drew convinces himself that he needs closure to finally resolve the issues of his past, especially where Athena is concerned. He doesn’t want to risk losing his heart again.
Yet, while the hero and heroine are fighting against the resurgence of old feelings, someone has broken into the secret family vault and stolen the famous, but toxic, gowns. Now, Drew and Athena vow to put aside their differences and work together to solve the mystery.
What better way to stage a romance than by throwing the reluctant hero and heroine together? There really isn’t. For fifteen years they’d managed to steer clear of each other, even while attending the same parties. So what’s an author to do but make it impossible for them to avoid each other?
In this short 220-page-book, Bodine starts the main story off at a leisurely pace, but by the middle the reader is hooked and can’t wait to find out if Drew and Athena will ever solve the mystery or resolve their issues. Of course, during the investigation of the stolen gowns, the reader might get perturbed by the fact that the heroine doesn’t ask the obvious questions (ahem!) to discover who is behind the theft. However, the sensual tension between the hero and heroine offers a nice distraction.
Throughout the book, Bodine presents a gradual sensual build up between Athena and Drew. By the end, their passion finally erupts in an uninhibited collision of bodies and souls, which brings about their eventual happily-ever-after.
