For those of you who have run a marathon, you know how thrilling it can be. Not just the grueling twenty six miles of the race, but everything that goes along with it. I truly believe that when you sign up for a race like that, you have to take in every moment. A marathon is an experience that should be savored.
It all starts with the thrill of the sign up. I decided this year to run the Chicago Marathon. So I marked my calendar for February 1st, which is the day that the registration opened. That morning I was on the computer by 6am, just to make sure I would get in. It sounds a little anal, but I would have been really upset if I didn’t get in.
After you are officially in, the next step is to pick your training plan. Plans are really easy to find. You can Google “marathon training plans” and you will find tons. Both the Chicago and New York Marathons offer their own plans, as do many other sites. Just find the one that best fits your level of running.
When the day of the race is finally here, there are couple things you will want to do. First, don’t forget to plan your outfit ahead of time. You definitely want to wash and wear your outfit before the big race. If anything is going to chafe or irritate you, you want to know before it is too late. You also want to try out any drinks or energy gels that you plan to use. The day of your race is not the time to try something new.
Lastly, please remember to really enjoy your race. The cheering crowds will urge you on. Your fellow runners will encourage you not to stop. And when you finally cross that finish line, you will have an amazing sense of accomplishment. So take in every moment of the big race.
