Be Active Your Way
Today the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) sponsored a webinar for groups, organizations and professionals who support the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Four speakers presented tested strategies that support Americans increasing their level of physical activity. Some highlights included:
- Stair strategy: By improving the aesthetics of stairwells through carpeting and paint, adding music and hanging pictures, this strategy proved to be quite effective at promoting ‘take the stairs campaign for a health heart’.
- PE game modifications: In order to prevent children waiting around for their turn, implementing modifications which will keep every kid moving and involved in the game (i.e. having the whole team run the bases when the batter hits a ball).
- Partnering with builders, city planners and parks and recreation to connect outdoor resources such as bike trails and walking paths.
It takes such small steps to make significant health improvements. Wii fitness players embody the ‘be active your way’ slogan by using the Wii for health-enhancing physical activity.
