Tributes to slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. were held around the country as people gathered to honor his memory on Jan. 18, which is the 25th federal observance of the holiday commemorating his birth. He would have turned 81 on Jan. 15.
Celebrations and events took place in locations like the Atlanta church where King had preached and in Alabama where a march commemorated King’s 1950s bus boycott aimed at segregation.
In addition, in Washington, DC President Barack Obama served meals to the needy to honor King’s legacy and later delivered a speech regarding the civil rights movement.
